Weight Loss Fitness Programs - Common Myths Exposed

The gym is full of lore and tales of long steady runs and slow, machine-like lifting. These are the most common weight loss myths and I have done some extensive research and am going to put these myths to the test.

Myth #1: The best way to lose weight is a long steady run.

Common perceptions are that the only way to do cardio is to do a 30 minute run or bike ride at a steady pace. Most professionals are suggesting (and have been suggesting) the HIIT program. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. The idea is that you do a 2 minute warm up at about 50% intensity and then go at 90% intensity for 30 seconds. Take the next 1:30 at 50% then bump up to 90% for another 30 seconds. Do this sequence 6 or 8 times in a single session. This will burn more fat, increase stamina gains, and work your heart better than a constant 30 minute session.

Myth #2: Slow, controlled lifting is the best way to build muscle.

Everyone knows that muscle takes more energy to maintain than fat (and if you didn't, now you do). So it is obvious that building muscle is an excellent way to burn fat. Most people stick to their father's and grandfather's motto of slow and controlled lifting.

Now, physiologically there are several different types of muscle fibers. The fast-twitch fibers are the ones that have the largest potential for growth, and therefore we really want to target these. Now, the best way to target these is to move through the lifting portion of the exercise quickly, this will engage more muscle fibers than moving slowly. Lower your weight with slow and controlled movement, but lift the weight quickly.
Now that these two common myths have been debunked, you can go make the most out of your weight loss fitness programs.
